Weekly Workouts

Happy Monday out there in the internet abyss!! I’m over here working in a coffee shop after an early morning boxing class. I’m drenched in sweat and absolutely exhausted, but I have to say, it’s pretty awesome being done with my workout for the day by 8am. I dig that.

Something I want to BRIEFLY talk about today is adrenal fatigue. That’s a huge topic and I’m not trying to get too deep into it, but I had a good reminder this past week that you can’t do it all. You may think you can, but it will catch up to you at some point. I say this because I’ve experienced it myself in the past. I worked constantly, I barely slept, I worked out multiple times per day and I didn’t take rest days. And it caught up to me after a year or two. My body couldn’t recover and rebuild. And that’s when I finally understood what stress does to the body. And with my job at this point, it sometimes comes with lots of stress. This past week, I was working up to filming 8 videos in one day then working all through the weekend. With that comes lots of prepping and planning…and stress. Before I would think that a workout would help reduce that stress, but I now know that it’s the opposite. By going to the gym, I would just be putting my body through even more stress and hurting myself longterm.

So nowadays, I take a look at my week, I take a look at my stress, and I begin to figure out if a workout is the best plan or not. Most of the time it is, but weeks like last week, it was more important to take time away from the gym and concentrate on work. That way I could limit the amount of stress on my body and come back to the gym ready to push through a workout.

There is definitely a fine line because saying you don’t need a workout because things are too stressful can turn into days then into weeks then sometimes into months. And we don’t want that either. But some extra days off during the week when you’re regularly working out and are having a stressful week is HEALTHY. You’re not going to lose everything you’ve built by working hard and you’re not going to instantly gain 10 pounds. You’re actually doing yourself a favor. Your body will be able to heal and you’ll come back stronger than before.

So today I challenge you to look at your own life. Look at your schedule, your stress, and your busy life and decide if you need a little extra time away from the gym to give your body a break. The answer may be yes or it may be no, but either way, it’s important to analyze your weeks and decide what’s most important for your body (and mind). Keep kicking ass every week then remember you deserve time off and time away. Your body is going to love you so much for taking care of it.
