Activewear That Gives Back (+special discount for you!)

My life consists mostly of living in activewear and eating too much food. Especially while in Charleston. Charleston knows how to make a delicious meal. Actually…LOTS of delicious meals. Luckily I had my latest Girlfriend Collective activewear with me to stretch around all the tasty snacks we were constantly consuming throughout the day. If I lived in South Carolina, this would be my only outfit of choice. I don’t think I could even have jeans in my closet. The humidity doesn’t mess around in the South.

But the main reason I love wearing Girlfriend Collective since I started trying it out a couple months ago is because it’s made from trash. Straight up. Girlfriend Collective tops, bras, leggings and shorts are all made from recycled ocean plastic and fishing nets! And when you put on the clothing, you would absolutely never know. It’s so soft, so stretchy and so breathable! They believe the best fashion is not about trends – it’s about quality. Which is why they focus on humane manufacturing, meticulous design, and sustainable materials. Girlfriend Collective has set out to create a community of people who care about every step of the process, especially the process of leaving the world better than it was before.

In Taiwan (once known as Garbage Island) there are around 23 million people. This obviously causes an overwhelming amount of trash in such a small place. And at some point, the government decided to stop ignoring the issue of trash and started pushing for recycling as much as possible, in turn leading their country to become the world leader in recycling. Girlfriend Collective has taken advantage of this recycling sorting to use #1 plastic (Polyethylene Terephthalate, also known as PET) to create their apparel. This is the same plastic that is used to make hard reusable water bottles like Nalgene bottles and is BPA free!

When I first found out that Girlfriend Collective was made from plastic bottles and fishing nets, I had no clue how that could even happen and still feel good on your skin. But they’ve done it! The PET chips are heated and extruded into spaghetti strands. Then reheated into superfine threads that are spun together to create yarn. How insane is that?! This process isn’t quick. They can only produce about 100 pairs-worth of fabric in a 24-hour period. But this process is actually making the world a better, more sustainable place. So yeah, it’s worth the extra time.

PaleOMG - Activewear That Gives BackGirlfriend Collective also works their butt off to make sure none of the dyes they use make their way back into the water system. The water they use to dye their fabrics gets treated to separate out the OEKO-certified safe dyes and any stray fibers from the water. When everything is separated, they measure the water to make sure it’s safe to release. The devices that measure this are set up to send information in real time to the Taiwanese EPA. With their approval, they discharge the water into a healthy stream where it goes on its way. But the coolest part is what they do with the dye mud. I didn’t even know dye mud was a thing. In most places, dye mud is dumped into a landfill. But Girlfriend Collective got creative and sends their dye mud to a pavement facility where it is transformed into paving stones, making sidewalks better for the community. How cool is that?!

Not only is Girlfriend Collective giving back to its community daily by simply using recycled products to create their activewear, but they also donate to Healthy Seas, which is an organization that funds divers to remove ghost nets that drift in the ocean killing sea life. No other brand out there that I know of is working this hard to create a better world for not only the humans that inhabit it, but the sea life that was here long before we were.

But I know what you’re thinking – sure, Girlfriend Collective is making a huge difference, BUT how does the clothing fit? Because I get it, that’s incredibly important, too. The items that Girlfriend Collective makes are soft and quick-drying, which was perfect for my sweaty days in Charleston. They stretch, they stay in place, and they give great coverage. No need to worry about that bum of yours showing through in a squat. They have you covered. Literally. Even though I’m not wearing it in this post, one of my favorite pieces from Girlfriend Collective are their tops. Their tanks tops and t-shirts are insanely soft and comfortable. Plus they come in a ton of different styles!

And Girlfriend Collective is kind enough to offer PaleOMG readers a special discount that is valid until November 5th. When you use code paleomg you’ll receive $20 off a set or $95 cart value! If you’re trying to figure out your size, I snagged all my items in a size small and ordered my leggings in the 23 3/4 length. Their leggings come in high rise (what I’m wearing) and class rise which is a little lower. I’m all about that high rise life! It’s been so cool to read about Girlfriend Collective and how they are making a difference. They are truly unlike any other brand I’ve seen and I feel so lucky to get to show my little online world what an outstanding brand they really are! I hope more and more companies can take on these types of values to start making the world a better place, one piece of apparel at a time!
