DIY Tassel Wall Hanging

I’ve always been a pretty crafty person so when I see a simple, but gorgeous piece of art or home decor item I can’t live without, I’ll always challenge myself to recreate it first before spending an arm and a leg. I stumbled across this beautiful tassel wall hanging on ETSY recently, but it was $150.00 and I just couldn’t bring myself to pull the trigger on something I was confident I could make myself.
I had almost everything I needed around the house so I jumped in the car to grab some yarn at my local Michaels; believe it or not, I ended up spending only $9.00 on this entire project. It probably helped that I couldn’t find a wooden dowel at the store, so I just ended up grabbing a stick from our brush pile in the backyard to hang it from #repurpose
Things you’ll need:
- Yarn
- Twine
- Wooden Dowel (or stick, if you’re like me)
- Hot Glue Gun
Step 1: Measure and cut multiple strips of yarn for your tassels - please keep in mind that you’ll be folding these in half so be sure to make the pieces twice as long as you'd like. How many pieces you cut will depend on the size/thickness and how many tassels you want on your design. I wanted to keep my tassels on the thinner side so I kept each tassel bunch to 10 pieces of yarn.
Step 2: Once you have your tassel bunches organized you’re ready to fold and secure them. Fold each bundle evenly in half - secure the top with a small piece of twine or string. I like a thicker “neck” on the tassels so I wrapped some extra twine around the top of each tassel.
Step 3: Cut strips of string to hang each tassel from. I used longer and shorter pieces for a more dynamic look but you can do them all the same size, as well. Tie one end of the string through the top of each tassel. I secured the other end of the string to the stick with a small dollop of hot glue.
Step 4: Measure and attach a piece of twine to the top of the stick/dowel so that you can hang it on the wall.
I’m really impressed with how easy and INEXPENSIVE it was to recreate this simple yet rustic piece and it adds so much to the space. In all, I probably spent around 5 hours putting this together - which actually isn’t too bad when I have a 12 month old hanging off all my limbs 24/7 (hahaha shout out to all my SAHM and work-from-home moms out there...you feel me!)
