A Mother’s Day Tribute: Like Mother, Like Daughter, Nutrisystem Style
To help celebrate Mother’s Day, we sat down with Karen and her daughter Sandy to discuss how they’ve supported each other on their Nutrisystem journey—they lost a combined 40 pounds*—and how it has changed their lives.
NS: How did you feel when you were overweight?
Karen: I didn’t like the way I felt. I felt very old and very frumpy. I didn’t like the way my clothes fit. I didn’t like how old it made me look, and I didn’t like the way it made me feel.
Sandy: I just felt uncomfortable. I had rolls when I sat down. I hated the belly rolls. And the muffin top. I hated to try on clothes; they didn’t fit. I had to buy bigger and bigger sizes and it wrecked my confidence. I felt unhappy and wanted to stand in the corner and not go out and enjoy life. I just didn’t feel good about myself.
Karen: She dressed very frumpily for her age. She would wear these long skirts, baggy sweaters and frumpy shoes. She was looking like she was my age, not her age. It’s like, hey, you’ve got to dress better.
Sandy: It’s true. I was trying to cover my body.
NS: Why did Nutrisystem work for you?
Karen: I think Nutrisystem worked for me because I was able to stick with it. With some of the other diets I’d been on, I didn’t see the kind of consistent weight loss I wanted, and I would get very hungry—I craved shoving food in my face all the time. But Sandy and I have both thought that there must be some magic ingredient in Nutrisystem food because it made us so full!
Sandy: I travel a lot for my job, so I’m glad I can bring Nutrisystem with me when I travel—although the TSA searched my Nutrisystem foods a few times! I also hate grocery shopping, so having Nutrisystem meals is perfect for me—just get a few quick things at the store and that’s it. Plus, Nutrisystem food is amazingly good. I’m losing weight but get to eat chocolate donuts, muffins, brownies and cake. That’s just amazing.
NS: As a mother and daughter, was it special to lose weight together?
Karen: Very much. My daughter completely inspired me to try Nutrisystem. If it hadn’t been for her, we wouldn’t have done this. She was the brains behind the operation.
Sandy: Nutrisystem has been a great program for us to be on together because of the support. We share our Nutrisystem foods, and when we’re traveling, we package them all up and bring them with us. We’ll sit and eat Nutrisystem together. I mean, what better way to enjoy it than with your mom? It’s been a great journey for us. My mom also motivates me. For example, when we travel, she always pushes us to walk—and challenging walks, like walking up several flights to the hotel room.
Karen: We’ve been partners in this journey. I talk to Sandy every day, and we get together every day to do yoga or exercise, and we walk on weekends.
NS: What’s life like now for you two?
Sandy: My life has completely changed. Every time I get on the scale, it’s just amazing. My clothes are all too big for me now, which is a fantastic feeling. Also, I started a new job—and I’m sure I got it because of the confidence in myself because of the weight loss.
Karen: I have a lot more energy since starting Nutrisystem because I’ve kicked up my exercise; my favorite thing to do now is work out. I enjoy doing yoga more; it feels better because my body is a little thinner now and so I can do stretches and poses that I never was able to do before because there was so much of me to try to stretch and pose. That’s been very good for me.
Sandy: I absolutely feel healthier, too. I actually have some muscle because I have all of this extra energy after losing weight on Nutrisystem. I can actually do pushups—real pushups. I can do planks. I have so much energy. I love taking an aerial skills class, where I can easily flip myself up and down. I literally am running around during the day doing sprints and jumping jacks and high knees because I have boundless energy.
Sandy: Mom said she had her high school daughter back because I am so much smaller. That was a big compliment. That was really special.
Karen: When I look in the mirror in the mornings I feel thinner. I feel like I look younger than I have in a while. I feel proud of myself for having accomplished something and I feel extremely good. I feel happier!
Sandy: And I’m happy that now I can say this is my young, pretty, thin mom!
