Simple Summer Apple Desserts

When you are looking for apple desserts, this 2 minute recipe is the only one you need!

We spent many summers hosting exchange students from Japan. It was one of our families favorite things to do.  In learning about their food culture, I was intrigued by the foods they considered to be dessert.  From the area in Japan where our students traveled from, the consensus was, their typical after dinner treat was fruit! I loved knowing this about them.  When I planned our meals for their time at our home, I looked up all the desserts I could that were made from fruit.

Apples are a great part of a healthy dessert! Not only are the sugars naturally sweet, but they are also packaged with vital vitamins and minerals! It’s a win- win for kids and parents for sure!  Fruit, with its natural sweetness, low calories, and being full of nutrients, are just the desserts they need.  And if you serve fruit for dessert often enough, in lieu of sugar laden processed desserts, the fruit will soon be plenty sweet for them.

There are so many varieties of apples that are good for different types of dessert.  We like:

  • Tart apples like Granny smith for apple pie
  • Sweet apples like Gala for apple crisps
  • Honey crisp apples are great for making applesauce.
  • Golden delicious are great for slicing and using sweet creamy dips or caramel

What are different ways to eat apples?

One reason apples are a favorite among so many kids, is there is such a variety of ways to eat them.  In fact, our biggest and loudest message at Super Healthy Kids is that if you want your kids to accept a new food (and the flavor of that food) than you should offer the food in a variety of different ways so they can experience in multiple textures and flavors.   For apples, this is so easy!  The variety of forms I’m talking about include:

  • Apple Juice – Apple juice is one of the first juices kids drink, and is a staple among US children!
  • Dried apples– we take these dried apples on a river trip every fall. They are so popular with the group we go with!
  • Cooked apples – like this dessert
  • Applesauce- Another first food for kids. So easy to love because of it’s mild flavor and texture.
  • Raw apples– eat them right off the core! I know kids love this, because I often find half eaten apples in places my kids shouldn’t be eating!

This recipe for a super simple dessert literally takes two minutes, tastes like apple crisp, and you can make just one serving for a quick indulgence!   Although, we used the microwave, because it’s simple and quick, we know many of you don’t like using it! That’s OK! An alternative would be to slice the apple and place in a covered baking dish. You could cook this at 350, for about 20-30 minutes.  Pierce your apples with a fork. If they feel soft, they are ready!

With apples full of fiber, antioxidants, and rich in the “good carbs”, this dessert is a great substitute for something that would be void of nutrition for your after dinner treat.  Give it a try and let us know what your kids think.

And while this video has terrible sound, I first published this post 8 years ago, when my adorable daughter (who is about to be a senior) was 9 years old! She made this video for this recipe! Simple Summer Apple Dessert. Kids in the Kitchen! A fast and easy way to make our all-time favorite dessert!
