Henry Cavill on What It Takes to Train (and Look) Like Superman

Henry Cavill’s letting us in on a secret.

“There is no one Superman workout,” Men’s Journal August 2018 cover star says in his behind-the-scenes video. “There are lots of different kinds of workouts required for the Superman physique. It’s become a body-sculpting thing. You’re balancing the diet as much as you can, trying to keep the body proportionate.”

For Cavill, that meant going through an intense workout program including front squats, power cleans, heavy rope training, back squats, and even some Jiu-Jitsu.

Since Cavill’s played Superman in Man of Steel, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Justice League—and potentially more in the future—he’s pretty much perpetually in shape, which was ideal for his role in Mission: Impossible—Fallout.

He plays a CIA operative who butts heads with Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt. Cavill had some very physical scenes in the film, including a brutal, knock-down-drag-out fight in a bathroom that’s as intense as anything that’s hit theaters this year.
