Sometimes it’s not what you put into your body; it’s what you don’t. Animal research from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology found that a 24-hour fast seems to double how quickly stem cells in the intestines regenerate.

 

 

These are special because they can become any type of cell necessary to repair damaged tissue or replace cells that have gotten too old and function poorly.

What I Learned from Fasting for a Year

This may help explain why fasting is linked with more energy, weight loss, and lower blood sugar, since your intestines digest food and extract nutrients to send to the blood stream. If you want to try an occasional fast, avoid caffeine that day, and ease back into eating with a light, healthy meal.
